World-class wingnut John Derbyshire says women should not be allowed to vote. On September 29, he said, on Alan Colmes’ radio show:
DERBYSHIRE: Among the hopes that I do not realistically nurse is the hope that female suffrage will be repealed. But I’ll say this – if it were to be, I wouldn’t lose a minute’s sleep.
COLMES: We’d be a better country if women didn’t vote?
D: Probably. Don’t you think so?
C: No, I do not think so whatsoever.
D: Come on Alan. Come clean here [laughing].
C: We would be a better country? John Derbyshire making the statement, we would be a better country if women did not vote.
D: Yeah, probably.
Not only did Derbyshire say that, but his new book— We Are Doomed: Reclaiming Conservative Pessimism— has a whole fucking chapter on that. Derbyshire’s basic justification for his ludicrous belief is the fact that women often vote in a way he disagrees with.
Lots of people vote in a way I disagree with. For example: many men support repressive socially conservative policies; patriarchy has been the system throughout human history, and causes too many problems (just read today’s newspapers). And yet even making some kind of a case for depriving some demographic of political power does not mean that we should. Ending women’s suffrage would mean that a majority of the population is affected by a government and laws that they have no possible way of getting input into. Doing that is wrong in itself.
