Newsweek has a great cover story about religious arguments for same-sex marriage, and it is worth a read.
The religious right wrong is hypocritical when it comes to opposition to same-sex marriage. Jesus says (in Luke 6:31, Authorized KJV): “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” (For context, this quotation is from the Sermon on the Plain).
The meaning of this quote is simple; it is the golden rule, the ethic of reciprocity, the command to treat others the way you want to be treated.
Let’s assume that the religious right wrong is following this command, after all it is Jesus who is saying this, and Christians are supposed to follow the commands of Jesus. Hence, they are treating same-sex couples the way they (the religious right wrong) want to be treated. Hence, they want to be treated to the same ban on marriage they are subjecting same-sex couples to. That’s right, they are against different-sex marriage!
Of course, that’s absurd. We all know that the religious right wrong are hypocrites. They don’t think the golden rule applies to them.
