Iceland’s parliament, the Althing, has unanimously (with abstentions) passed a bill allowing marriage equality in that country (hat tip). Good move. Same–sex marriage is a complete non–issue in that country.
Notably, the current Prime Minister of Iceland, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, is openly lesbian. This helps to show the power of being out. The number one factor influencing someone’s support for LGBT rights is knowing someone who is gay or lesbian. So perhaps this is would be a good occasion to get out of the closet.
Of course, as a straight ally I have to recognize that LGBT people are often the victims of bigotry, discrimination, or worse. The existence of heterosexual privilege requires me to recognize that coming out may not be in your best interests or possible at this time. However, we should still work against homophobia and bigotry towards LGBT people.
